Intent

At Lovington Church of England Primary School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) are fundamental in enabling children to become happy, healthy, safe, confident and responsible members of society. Our curriculum is underpinned by our Christian vision and values of Kindness and Respect, Courage and Resilience, Gratitude, Hope, Trust and Peace, which help our children to flourish both now and in the future.  

Our curriculum is delivered through the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE scheme, carefully adapted to meet the needs of our pupils and community.

Our curriculum aims to: 

• Develop children's understanding of healthy, positive and respectful relationships.  

• Promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing through resilience, self-awareness and emotional literacy.  

• Equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to stay safe both online and offline.  

• Enable children to recognise risks, establish healthy boundaries and seek support from trusted adults when needed.  

• Foster respect, inclusion and appreciation of diversity within our school, local community and modern Britain.  

• Develop critical thinking, media literacy and decision-making skills.  

• Support pupils in becoming active citizens who understand British Values and contribute positively to society.  

• Develop financial awareness and economic understanding appropriate to their age and stage of development.  

• Prepare children for the physical and emotional changes associated with growing up.  

The inclusion of safeguarding and online safety within our curriculum equips children with the knowledge, skills and confidence to navigate an increasingly digital world safely and responsibly. Through this learning, pupils develop resilience, self-awareness and informed decision-making skills, enabling them to thrive as happy, confident and responsible young people. 

Implementation

PSHE and RSE are taught through a carefully planned, progressive curriculum using the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE Scheme of Work, adapted to meet the needs of our pupils and community. Learning builds progressively from EYFS through to Year 6 and revisits key concepts to deepen understanding over time.  

The curriculum is organised into the following areas: 

• Family and Relationships 

• Health and Wellbeing 

• Safety and the Changing Body 

• Citizenship 

• Economic Wellbeing 

• Identity (Upper Key Stage 2) 

• Age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education 

 

We implement our curriculum through: 

• Weekly PSHE/RSE lessons.  

• High-quality discussion, reflection and pupil voice opportunities.  

• Explicit teaching of safeguarding, online safety and healthy relationships.  

• Whole-school wellbeing initiatives, including work with the Mental Health Support Team, ELSA provision and Wellbeing Ambassadors.  

• Links with assemblies, collective worship, Religious Education and wider curriculum opportunities.  

• Engagement with local and national initiatives, current affairs and Picture News.  

• Learning visits, visitors and workshops that enrich pupil understanding and promote personal safety and wellbeing.  

• Inclusive teaching that reflects the diversity of modern Britain and meets the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND.  

A safe and respectful learning environment is established through agreed class ground rules, enabling children to discuss sensitive issues confidently, respectfully and appropriately.  

Impact

Children at Lovington Church of England Primary School will:

Assessment

The impact of PSHE and RSE is measured through: 

• Pupil voice and pupil interviews.  

• Monitoring of planning and curriculum delivery.  

• Lesson observations and learning walks.  

• Work scrutiny and evidence of learning.  

• Staff feedback and professional dialogue.  

• Parent and community engagement.  

• Governor monitoring and curriculum review.  

• Safeguarding, wellbeing and pastoral monitoring, including liaison with the SENDCo, ELSA and Mental Health Lead.  

Through this monitoring process, we ensure that our PSHE and RSE curriculum remains relevant, responsive and impactful, enabling every child to flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
